Blue Light Blocking Lenses

Let's admit it, most of us are on our screens a good bit of the day. Our work requires us to be on a screen. School requires us to be on a screen. A lot of our recreational time is spent on a screen. This is just becoming a fact of life. Screens are a necessary part of our days. Regardless of how necessary we feel that our screens are, though, the harsh effect they have on our eyes cannot be ignored. At Alpine Vision in Colorado Springs, CO, we understand that you may not be able to avoid extensive screen time. There are, however, steps you can take to keep your eyes healthy even during screen time.

.

What is Blue Light and Why is It Bad?

Blue light is the type of light that is emitted from digital screens. This type of light is harsh on the eyes and the nerves which connect your eyes to your brain. In addition to being harsh on the delicate eye, blue light also has a very stimulating effect on the brain. When your eyes are exposed to blue light late in the evening, it can make it difficult for you to fall asleep. This is a huge contributor to sleep deprivation in the modern world.

What are Blue Light Blocking Lenses?

Blue light blocking lenses are an optometry innovation that helps protect your eyes from the harsh blue light which is emitted from screens. Individuals who wear glasses can have their prescription lenses treated with blue light blocking technology. Individuals who do not currently need glasses can wear non-prescription blue light blocking lenses during extended periods of screen time. Wearing blue light blocking lenses will help protect your eye health.

Another benefit of blue light blocking glasses is that they can improve your sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene is a term used to describe how well you sleep, and more importantly, your habits which either contribute to or decrease the quality of your sleep. Many sleep specialists advise people to get off of their screens for at least an hour before bedtime. If this is not possible, blue light blocking lenses are useful and will improve the quality of your sleep. You can use the lenses at night to avoid the stimulating effects of blue light.
