What Causes Blurry Vision?

There are quite a number of causes of blurry vision. Apart from refractive vision errors like myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, or astigmatism, a few other causes of blurry vision include:

  • Wet macular degeneration, which is a result of the growth of abnormal vessels in the eye, causing leakage of blood and other fluid into the macula.
  • Conjunctivitis, which is inflammation of the conjunctiva of your eye caused by bacteria, a virus, or allergies.
  • A corneal abrasion, which occurs when something scratches the surface of the clear covering on the front of your eye.
  • Migraines, those preceded by auras, can cause blurred vision, flashing lights, wavy lines, and other vision disturbances.
  • Optic neuritis occurs when the optic nerve is inflamed, usually caused by early multiple sclerosis or an autoimmune reaction or condition like lupus. This often causes blurriness in only one eye.
  • Eye strain from focusing on something for a long time without taking a break, like reading or driving at night and in poor lighting conditions can also cause blurry vision. It may also be caused by focusing on an electronic device like a cellphone or laptop monitor.
  • A foreign body in the eye, like dust or grit, can cause blurry vision which usually clears when the offending object is removed.
  • Some medications may cause blurry vision as a side effect to taking them. This is usually indicated on the prescription.
  • Trauma to the eye or head may cause blurry vision.

Depending on the cause of your blurry vision, you will get relief from different treatments that address the specific cause. As mentioned, refractive vision errors like astigmatism and myopia are the most common causes of blurry vision and are treated with the use of prescription glasses and contacts.
