Myopia FAQ's Answered by Our Colorado Springs,
Often, when you're in a doctor's office, the practitioner uses medical terms that aren't always common knowledge to individuals who aren't in that field. If you have been told that you have myopia, we'd like to explain what that means. At Alpine Vision, serving Colorado Springs, and the surrounding region, our optometrists see patients with this issue all of the time and we would like for you to understand the issue as well as the treatment.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia is a term in optometry that describes nearsightedness, meaning you can see close up fine but you struggle to see objects that are far away clearly. A refractive error causes light to not shine on your retina properly. Due to the irregular shape of your eye, light enters your eye, bends, and shines before your retina.
Can Anyone Get Myopia?
Many people first experience myopia in childhood or adolescence. It can linger and worsen into adulthood. However, some people don't experience myopia until adulthood.
Do Electronic Devices Like Television and Computers Cause Myopia?
One question commonly heard by an optometrist is, "Do electronic devices cause myopia?" It doesn't matter how close you sit to the television or how much you look at a computer; you won't develop myopia directly as a result. You may, however, experience eye fatigue and strain from it.
Myopia stems from an issue with your cornea or lens. Your eyeball may be longer than the average. On the other hand, your cornea may have too steep of a curve. Although electronics aren't a cause, reading, writing, or excessive computer work could put you at an increased risk of myopia.
Will Myopia Worsen Without Corrective Measures?
Generally, when you're in adulthood, your vision won't worsen from not wearing your glasses. It'll worsen as a result of the curvature of your eye changing. If you don't wear glasses or contacts for myopia, it can affect your quality of life, though. In some cases, you might experience eye strain as a result.
In children with less serious cases, glasses usually aren't recommended for both up-close and far-away eyesight. Wearing corrective eyewear all of the time as a child can worsen the problem. In children with only a minor case of myopia, wearing glasses to see far away only may be able to strengthen the eyes, so that your child won't need glasses forever.
How Is Myopia Corrected?
This is another one of the common myopia questions that we run into. The answer to this is through contacts or glasses. These, however, won't reverse the changes in the shape of your eye, so they don't cure the problem. LASIK eye surgery may correct the problem or at least reduce your need for corrective eyewear. Our optometry practitioner can provide you with a consultation to go over your options.
